SANDOZ, Calif. (AP) — The pharmaceutical giant Pfizer, the world's biggest drug maker, has launched a drug that it said is "probably" better than what it had in January, the day after its patent expired for Viagra. The drugmaker is trying to get to market with a new name for its drug, Cialis, which it has been marketing for 36 years, and which has helped the drug in the United States since 1998.
Pfizer is trying to make a name for its own erectile dysfunction drug, Cialis, in the U. S. and Europe, the company said.
The drug, which is also sold under the name Viagra, will be sold in Europe and the U. as the impotence pill, which it is selling for $6.37 per pill. It was the fourth erectile dysfunction drug to be launched in Europe since the patent expired last year.
Pfizer said Monday it has launched Cialis in the U. for roughly the same period as its other products, including Lipitor, an over-the-counter drug used to lower cholesterol.
"Pfizer has been working with a number of other drugmakers and is committed to developing a new drug to treat the symptoms of high cholesterol and type 2 diabetes," said Dr. Sidney Wolfe, director of the University of Pennsylvania's drug trials division.
"There are other therapies that Pfizer has developed to treat erectile dysfunction," said Wolfe, who is with Pfizer's medical research unit in New York City. "We've already seen some of these therapies that have been available to patients for years."
But Pfizer said it hasn't yet made a decision on whether it will continue marketing the drug for its own erectile dysfunction product. It has been trying to make a name for its own erectile dysfunction product in the U. and Europe, which is sold in generic form.
Pfizer's patent for Viagra expired in March, so it has been in the process of going through an "early stage," said Wolfe, who is with Pfizer's medical research unit in New York City.
"They said that, for the most part, they've been marketing the product," Wolfe said. "We don't know how that compares to the other erectile dysfunction drugs on the market."
Pfizer is seeking to appeal the decision by the U. District Court for the Eastern District of California.
Pfizer said it has appealed the decision to the Federal Trade Commission, which had ordered the court to rule on its appeal of the court decision.
The company did not immediately return calls or messages seeking comment from the time it took to file the appeal.
Pfizer said it is in the process of filing an Abbreviated New Drug Application for Cialis, which is expected to launch in the spring of 2004.
